Navigating Cataract Surgery Recovery: Essential Post-Operative Dos and Don’ts
A practical, reassuring clinical guide for patients and caregivers following sutureless phacoemulsification.
- ✓ Visual clarity begins improving within 24 to 48 hours, with complete stabilization over 3–4 weeks.
- ✓ Tap water and hand contamination must be strictly kept away from the healing incision.
- ✓ Strict adherence to the drop schedule is vital to prevent inflammation and infection.
- ✓ Always attend your scheduled post-operative reviews on Day 1, Week 1, and Month 1.
The First 48 Hours: Settling Into Healing
Modern micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) is performed through tiny 2.2mm incisions that seal naturally without stitches. However, because the eye has undergone microscopic intraocular tissue changes, the initial 48 hours require careful gentleness.
It is completely normal to experience mild foreign-body sensation, slight watering, or reddish conjunctiva immediately after the numbing drops wear off. Your vision may appear foggy or bright initially as your pupil settles and your brain adapts to the immense amount of clean light entering through your new clear intraocular lens.
Crucial Rules for Protecting Your Eye
The micro-incision must heal undisturbed. Adhere strictly to these core protective measures during the first 7 to 10 days:
- Never rub, press, or squeeze the operated eye under any circumstance.
- Wear your protective transparent eye shield every night while sleeping during the first week to prevent accidental bumping.
- Do not splash tap water directly onto your face or eyes. Sponge clean your face gently.
- Avoid head baths, hair washes, and steam baths for at least 7 to 10 days.
- Postpone vigorous exercise, gym workouts, heavy lifting (>10 kg), and bending down repeatedly.
Mastering the Eye Drop Regimen
Your prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are the single most important defense against intraocular infection (endophthalmitis) and inflammation.
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap before instilling drops. Tilt your head back, pull your lower eyelid down gently to form a small pocket, and let one drop fall without touching the tip of the bottle to your eye, lashes, or skin. If you have two different drops scheduled at the same hour, wait at least 5 to 7 minutes between drops so the second does not wash out the first.
When to Contact the Hospital Immediately
